“History, despite its wrenching pain cannot be unlived, but if faced with courage need not be lived again.”

  • My Teaching Philosophy

My goal is to provide students with the tools needed to become active citizens, and critical thinkers beyond the classroom. My teaching style is collaborative, as I hold that students must be mentored and encouraged, nearly as much as lectured to.

I believe that we learn best when we can, wherever possible, follow our own interest, which is why I attempt to give students varied types of assignments, and when possible, choice in assignments and assessments. When I plan the final project for my History of American Sexuality course, I offer students their choice of a book to read as the basis of their critical assessment of the book as a historical source. The first year I used this assignment, two of the three books I offered worked extremely well, allowing the students to delve further into the sexual and gendered shifts which followed the American Revolution. The third book, while clearly enjoyable to the students, did not prompt the deeper understanding of the period that I had hoped. With the goal of having students engage more with the concepts from class, I revised the paper assignment and replaced the book with a history of transgender relationships, to much more successful papers.

As the nature of some of the readings assigned in my History of American Sexuality course can be difficult for students to navigate, I make a point of employing a trauma-informed and human rights approach to teaching. This means that while students will not always be able to avoid traumatic or sensitive topics, I guide the class in a way that is respectful of survivors of trauma while making myself available to students outside of class time to talk, listen, or offer additional support resources.

    • I had an extremely tumultuous session due to family issues. Prof. Stegeman was most helpful, more than I could have ever imagined. I just returned to school and it means so much to me, I don't want to mess up beyond repair, which is what would have happened if she had not helped. It may not seem normal to put the "strongly agree" responses I put on some answers, however I just wanted people to know she went above and beyond to give me every opportunity, I am truly appreciative.

    • Professor Stegeman was very responsive to any emails I sent and her feedback was always very helpful. It was nice being a part of this class.

    • Prof. Stegeman was most helpful one I ever have had, really made sure I suceeded.

    • I thought the organization of the course as a whole was very effective. The lectures were thorough and I thought the quizzes were fair assessments.

    • I appreciated the more open final essay content requirements as I feel it allowed me to focus more on analysis off the subject matter and less on just meeting stringent content requirements. I took away a lot from this course and was happy to have taken it

Amazing TA. Very helpful and kind.

    • She was great; super understanding, and smart.

    • Sarah, Thank you for all your help through out this course. Every time I reach out to you for help and support you went out of your way to help me succeed. I hope to take another class with you in the future.

    • She was a great TA, but class participation made the class very dry and I felt like I was just waiting out the clock every time I sat down

    • You are a great teacher

    • Thanks for your advice when I felt worried about this course, and thanks for treating me respectfully.
